Abstract:

In this article the author clarifies that there are no bilingual societies, only bilingual individuals. Balanced bilingualism, if it exists, is always transitory, since one language always imposes itself on the other. The usual are diglossic situations.

Currently Basque is a language of choice in the Basque Country. In no corner of our country is its use mandatory. It is, therefore, a language that is completely dispensable.

A new linguistic policy to promote the Basque language is required. It is necessary to remove complex of Basque speakers, raise public awareness of the seriousness of the situation and turn Basque into an indispensable language in Euskal Herria.
