Abstract:
Xabier Arregi has complained about the room allocated by the public (Basque language) TV station ETB1 to Spanish. On the other hand, ETB2, the Spanish language channel, hardly accommodates a slot for Basque. It actually happens to be easier to hear Catalan than Basque.
It feels especially offensive to see that interviews to Basque speakers with full command of the language are conducted in Spanish. It would be very easy for them to just speak in their language and arrange subtitles in Spanish, but as it turns out, there is no will for that.
The author suggests that ETB’s promotion of Spanish may be hiding shadowy political guidelines.
