Abstract:
One of the school’s main functions is to help its pupils integrate into a specific national community, as Ane Ablanedo explains in this article.
Ikastolas are the only schools operating across the whole of the Basque Country, as they extend throughout the whole Basque nation, transcending artificial administrative boundaries.
The Spanish education system now allows teaching in the Basque language, but it will never stop imposing a Spanish-based curriculum on its pupils. We Basques, however, have our own education system, the ikastola: a network of schools that not only aims to educate our pupils in our own language, but also to nurture Basque citizens who are fully integrated into Basque culture and national community
