Abstract:

The autor of this article, Anjeles Iztueta, reflects on the closure of the Basque-language daily EUSKALDUNON EGUNKARIA, in 2003, ordered by a Spanish judge under the accusation of it being an instrument of ETA. Iztueta recalls the massive demonstration in Donostia-San Sebastián in protest at the closure of the newspaper, and the torture reported by some of those arrested in the judicial operation, including the newspaper’s Director Martxelo Otamendi.

“They must have done something….” some people said, justifying the arrests and the closure of the newspaper. But the final judgment of the case, in 2010, totally acquitted the accused and refuted the imputed relationship between ETA and the newspaper.
