Abstract:
The hyper-minority status that we Basques have in our country explains precisely why the occupiers hardly need to resort to brutal physical violence against us at this point, as they did in the past, states the writter of this article.
On the one hand, each case of national oppression, colonization, and ethnocide has its own historical process, with the intensity of physical violence by colonizers varying at different points in history.
Native Americans or Irish people are not being massively massacred today, but at certain points in history, they have suffered the most blatant genocide. Does the fact that they are not being massively massacred today deny the oppression and ethnocide they suffer?
The same is true for us Basques.
Some Basques who are not very patriotic tell us that the suffering of Palestine cannot be compared to the situation of the Basque people. They forget that in the past we have suffered episodes like those in Palestine or worse, as a result of the Spanish and French occupation of our homeland.
