Abstract:

In this article, writer Pako Sudupe mentions the need for a third Basque renaissance to empower the Basque nation. To strengthen its identity and face the cultural and linguistic challenges of a highly globalized world.

Mr. Sudupe recalls that the first Basque renaissance took place in the 1920s and 1930s, when a group of intellectuals close to the Basque Nationalist Party (EAJ-PNV) worked successfully in the political and cultural fields.

The second Basque renaissance took place in the 1950s and 1960s, led not by the Basque Nationalist Party, but by young people from the Basque nationalist left. In the midst of Franco’s dictatorship, this Basque renaissance managed to promote the Basque language and culture in a very difficult political context.

Now we need a third renaissance to revitalise our language and culture, at a time when worrying signs of weakness are appearing. Organisations working to promote our language tell us that we are in a state of linguistic emergency.
