Abstract:
Recently, the Euskalgintzaren Kontseilua, an organisation that works to promote and normalise the Basque language in society, presented a document entitled ‘Batuz Aldatu’ (Change Together). This proposal seeks to develop more ambitious language policies and has gained the support of many organisations in the Basque Country.
In this article, however, Mr Jon Alemán highlights some shortcomings in this proposal. It does not emphasise the reasons that have led to our language becoming marginalised, it does not criticise the lack of ambition that Basque nationalist parties sometimes have with regard to our language, and it does not emphasise that, despite our society becoming increasingly diverse, Basque is our own language and our hallmark of identity. Likewise, the author of this article would like to see a clearer message regarding the linguistic model that should be applied in schools in our country.
