“COMMON LANGUAGE”

Abstract:

Spaniards often speak of the “common language”, meaning that all the inhabitants of the Iberian Peninsula (except for the Portuguese) know Spanish.

But they do not explain that this knowledge of Spanish was imposed by force, through punishments in schools and the marginalisation of their own languages, in all Iberian nations with a language other than Spanish. The same was done by the French in the Northern Basque Country, and the same has been done by most European states with their peripheral languages.

The common language is the result of centuries of imperialist policies.
