Abstract:

This article by Doctor of Philosophy Xabier Arregi exposes the selective memory of the Spanish. According to Spanish politicians and historians, only the organization ETA has operated violently during the last 150 years in the Basque Country, spanning from 1960 to 2011. By contrast, they ignore the fact that Spanish socialist gunmen shot dead approximately one thousand Basques in 1934 and later during the period 1936-1937. Similarly, the period extending from 1872 to 1876, the Second Carlist War, saw the death of over 50,000 Basques during the invasion waged by the Spanish over the Southern Basque Country to impose Spanish state unity. Commemorative events turn a blind eye to the plight brought about by Spain during these last centuries perpetrated by Spanish socialists and during the Carlist Wars and Francoism.
