Abstract:
Spain is not only a state, Spain is also a nation, Joxe Manuel Odriozola reminds us in this article. A nation that functions as such in the Basque Country under Spanish rule. A nation that aspires that the Basques south of the Pyrenees identify with it. A nation that seeks, in short, to substitute in our territory the Basque nation for the Spanish one, that is to say, our national assimilation.
The more we Basques integrate ourselves into the national systems of Spain and France, the less sense our nationalism or our desire for independence will make. Our national crisis is a direct consequence of the close relationship we have with the Spanish nation that oppresses us.
