In this excellent article Joxe Manuel Odriozola highlights some of the points that we often express from our thinking: languages are not simply instruments of communication but rather above all are basic pillars of national identity. The language imposes on the speaker basic references of their life, a system of specific cultural and identity characteristics.
The author regrets that the majority of Basques consider that the language is a neutral communication tool, and that living through Basque is compatible with living through Spanish or French. Furthermore, this type of bilingualism seems enriching to us. They are the painful consequences of an erroneous definition of language.
