MARXISM AND COLONIALISM

JOXE ARAKAMA LOPEZ DE GEREÑU

Abstract:

The one-time Marxism measured the situation of a colony against its income per capita. It did not take heed of the emotional status of the subdued people, the resignation, anxiety and exhaustion spurred by subjugation, the rage triggered by seeing one’s own feelings, language, culture and values put down. The author regards the position held by the Spanish left towards Catalonia as European national imperialism. They, the party Podemos, aspire at best to accommodate Catalonia within Spain, so what would they do if Catalonia took the path towards independence? That is a guess. While the left has done something with respect to Catalonia at the European Parliament, silence prevails on the public sphere across all the states; the trail blazed by Catalonia does not go down well with the European national-imperialist right, but neither with the European national-imperialist left. Finally, Joxe Arakama urges Marxism followers to bear in mind peoples’ identities, and stand up for them.
